The ski resort of Silver Star is located in the Okanagen Valley, in southern British Columbia, and offers excellent skiing for beginners, families and experts alike. Silver Star has a charming ambience, as this 1890’s mining town is full of colourful Victorian architecture, and the pedestrian streets house elegant hotels, restaurants and shops.

The resort is the fourth largest in British Columbia and the first ski resort in the area to open each year. Silver Star is known for its’ great snow coverage, receiving about 6m per year, creating a snowpack of 2.5m, and is used as the annual training ground for the Canadian Cross-Country Ski Team.

Skiing in Silver Star – The Mountains

Silver Star is home to two very different mountain faces – Vance Creek, the south face, which is perfect for families with its’ nicely groomed gentle slopes, and Putman Creek, full of steep challenging terrain. The resort is situated at a height of 1,609m, with 11 lifts carrying skiers around the 107 marked trails and up to the highest point at 1,914m. The ski school at Silver Star has an excellent reputation, with some of the best professionals is the country offering instruction here.

Beginners have 20% of the runs here, and both the Powder Gulch Express and the Silver Queen Chair take skiers to some nice long confidence- building runs on Vance Creek. Intermediates can choose from 50% of the trails, with the Summit Chair and the Comet Six-Pack Express leading to some lovely long cruising blues, the longest of which is 8km. There are some single black runs on Putman Creek, but in general this area is reserved for expert and advanced skiers, with 60 challenging trails, full of steep, narrow chutes.

Snowboarders are served in Silver Star by a new terrain park and a half-pipe, and will enjoy freeriding on Putman Creek. Neighbouring Big White Mountain, Canadas’ highest resort is also available on the same lift pass, for skiers who would like a change of scene, and Silver Star offers night skiing from the Summit Chair. The resort has over 100km of cross-country trails to explore and there are plans to expand the Vance Creek area to offer an additional 50% more terrain, creating even more trails for all abilities.

Skiing in Silver Star – The Après-ski

Silver Star caters for everyone, with a great choice of restaurants, bars, pubs and lounges to be found in the village, which is especially pretty at night when the buildings are lit up. Some favourites for après-ski entertainment are Vance Creek Saloon, Charlies’ and the Wine Cellar Lodge and Silver Star is home to some clubs and a casino.

All the accommodation is centred around the village with some offering ski-in/ski-out lodging. Other activities to enjoy whilst skiing in Silver Star are tubing, showshoeing, ice-skating, sleigh rides, and the indoor fitness centre with its’ climbing wall.

Skiing In Lake Louise with Directline Skiing

Lake Louise, in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, is one of the largest ski areas in Canada, and together with Sunshine Village and Mount Norquay, makes up the Banff ski area, all available on one lift pass.

With 200km of pistes encompassing a huge variety of terrain, the spectacular beauty of the magnificent Banff National Park, and a charming village offering a warm, cosy atmosphere, it’s no wonder Lake Louise is so popular.

The area receives a huge amount of snow each season, yet is backed up by Canadas’ largest snowmaking system, resulting in Lake Louises’ long ski season running from early November to mid May.

Lake Louise Skiing – The Mountains

Lake Louise is made up of four mountain faces, spread over 18 km, with three distinct ski areas – the Front Face, the Back Bowls and the Larch Area. It is possible to follow the sun all day, whilst moving around the different mountain faces. The resort is situated at 1,635m, with 29 lifts taking skiers up to 2,637m, and in addition to the 100 marked trails, there are copious powder bowls, chutes and glades to explore.

The ski school at Lake Louise has excellent instruction and beginners can choose from 36 easy runs. As the resort has been designed with a green run from the top of each of the lifts, beginners too can enjoy the stunning scenery and beauty of Lake Louise. Intermediate skiers have a huge amount of choose from, from the impeccably groomed long cruising runs of the Larch Area to the powder skiing of the Back Bowls. It is the advanced skier who has the most terrain in Lake Louise, however, with some fast downhill world cup trails on the Front Face, gladed and bump runs in the bowls and incredibly steep chutes, including the resorts’ infamous Whitehorn 2 gullies, and an extensive area for extreme skiing within the Larch Area.

An excellent volunteer guide programme, the Ski Friends, is available to introduce visitors to all the area has to offer. Lake Louise has one of the largest snowboard terrain parks in North America, served by high speed quad chair, and is linked to a superpipe.

Skiing In Lake Louise – The Après-ski

The huge Lodge of the Ten Peaks dominates Lake Louise base village and this massive log cabin is a fabulous place to relax with its’ wonderful sun deck and fireplace, bars and cafes. The village is home to a range of accommodation, including the famous Chateau Lake Louise on the shores of the lake with breathtaking views of the Victoria glacier, and the restaurants in Lake Louise offer a mixture of gourmet cuisine and casual laid-back Western fare.

Skiing in Kicking Horse with Directline Skiing

Kicking Horse, a remote ski resort situated in the Golden Valley region of the Rockies in British Columbia, offers advanced skiers a fantastic chance to experience terrain once only accessible to heli-skiers. This vast wilderness, still a firm favourite with heli-skiers, is surrounded by six National Parks and has a population of just 8,500.

Kicking Horse first opened its’ doors in 2000, and was the first new Alpine ski resort to open in the Canadian Rockies in 25 years. Now a major development plan is afoot to turn Kicking Horse into one of the largest ski resorts in North America, and by 2010 the resort will be home to a skiable acreage of over 4.000 acres, offering 3,000 beds in addition to extensive shops, bars and restaurants.

Skiing in Kicking Horse – The Slopes

Kicking Horse is a resort for advanced and expert skiers, with 60% of the 100 runs allocated to them. The terrain is steep and there is a danger of avalanches here. The northeastern slopes retain excellent powder and all visitors can take advantage of the Ski Tours available to both navigate the runs and admire the beautiful scenery.

For less competent skiers, the area at the top of the Catamount chair has some gentle runs, and more confident beginners can tackle the longest run in Kicking Horse, the 10km It’s a Ten, which is accessible from the top of the Golden Eagle Express Gondola. This lift takes skiers to the highest peak of Kicking Horse, 2,450m and the second highest vertical drop in Canada, 1,260m. Crystal Bowl and Bowl Over, found at the top of the gondola, offer classic steep chutes and tight trees, and there are plenty of thrilling double-black diamond trails throughout the resort. Deep powder heli-skiing is still offered at Kicking Horse, and tours exploring the back country are available.

Skiing in Kicking Horse – The Après-ski

There are some friendly bars both at the base and at the nearest town, Golden, such as The Day Lodge, Corks and the Scottish pub in the Highlands Lodge. The Golden Eagle Express takes skiers up to the highest mountain top restaurant in Canada, the Eagle Eye, offering gourmet food and wine in a spectacular setting, and there are some interesting contemporary restaurants as well as cosy bistros in the area.

Nightlife centres on dancing in the bars, such as The Lodge or Packers or playing pool. Other activities to enjoy whilst skiing in Kicking Horse are cross-country skiing and ice-climbing. The national parks are definitely worth a visit to photograph the scenery and wildlife, and half-way up the mountain is the worlds’ largest grizzly bear refuge.

The real skiing in Fernie takes place in the bowls, with a range of options for strong intermediates and advanced skiers, full of incredibly steep and challenging slopes, plenty of trees, lots of ungroomed terrain and deep powder.

Niagara Falls from Toronto

If you're in Toronto you simply must visit Niagara Falls - just a couple of hours away from the city. Niagara Falls itself is so famous that it hardly needs an introduction or description.

The Canadian side of the falls (commonly called The Horseshoe Falls) is far more spectacular than the US side. Amazingly, 3 million litres of water pour over the falls every second while another 3 million litres of water per second are diverted to hydro electric power stations.

They also have the ability to stop the flow of water completely which they did for several months in 1969 and also more recently to prevent someone from throwing themselves off in a barrel. The only other time that the flow of water has stopped was in 1848 when the Niagara Falls froze over completely.

With temperatures slightly higher nowadays, this is unlikely to happen again. Nevertheless, The Falls are dramatic in the Winter and the spray that they generate in the summer months is invigorating.

Sun Peaks Skiing Holidays

Sun Peaks is the second largest ski resort in British Columbia, and recent investment and major development has put the resort firmly on the map.

The motto of Sun Peaks is “Three Mountains, One Village”, and the combination of Tod, Sundance and Mount Morrisey now offer a huge selection of skiing possibilities, all in a resort with a fantastic reputation for grooming, state of the art facilities and brand new slopeside accommodation.

The Slopes

Sun Peaks village is located at 1,198m, and the 11 lifts, including one of only 5 high speed detachable quads with a bubble in North America, the Sunburst, take skiers up to 2,080m. Beginners have their own separate learning area at the base, and at the top of each of the lifts there is an easy green route, with a childrens’ terrain park offering fun, friendly instruction on the immaculately groomed Sundance Mountain. The newly open Mount Morrisey has plenty of intermediate terrain on its’ north facing slopes, with dry powder and lots of tree skiing.

Tod, the original mountain in the resort, and the highest, has terrain both above and below the treeline, and here the runs cater mainly for experts, with huge open bowls at the top leading down to dense glades and challenging moguls. Sun Peaks is an excellent resort for boarders, with a 2,500 foot long terrain park, mini-terrain park, half-pipe and boardercross. One of the worlds’ few speed skiing centres is located here in Sun Peaks, with the finish positioned next to one of the mountain restaurants, an ideal spot for spectators.

Sun Peaks is set to receive more investment and development in the coming years, with plans to turn it into a major international ski resort involving more acreage, facilities and luxury accommodation, including an ice-sculpted hotel.

The Après-ski

Entertainment focuses around the hotels here in Sun Peak village, with a good selection of bars and restaurants, mainly fairly casual. Some favourites are Bottoms Bar and Grill and the resorts nightclub, Mackdaddys, which everybody seems to frequent. There are plenty of weekly theme nights, including casino nights and torchlit descents, and Sun Peaks offers both family-friendly casual dining and more formal restaurants, serving Pacific-Northwest and European fare.

Snowmobiling tours, dog-sledding, ice-skating, tobogganing, tubing, night-skiing are all available at Sun Peaks. The area hosts the annual Icewine Festival in January, attracting visitors from all over the country to this fun wine-tasting event.

Sunshine Village Skiing Holidays

Sunshine Village, together with Lake Louise and Mount Norquay, is one of the areas covered on the Banff Tri-Resort lift pass, which offers 7,700 acres of fabulous skiing within the beautiful Banff National Park, in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine boasts more than three times more snow than the other resorts, almost 400” per year, resulting in the longest ski season in the area, running from mid November to mid May.

This resort has no need for snowmaking facilities and maintains an excellent snow record, offering both bowl and tree skiing throughout its’ 3,300 acres, with plenty of terrain for all levels of skier.

The Mountains

Sunshine Village is situated at 2,160m, with the village only accessible from the car park, by the worlds’ fastest gondola. From here, a selection of 11 more lifts take skiers around the 107 trails, with 22% of the runs dedicated to beginners. The learning area is right by the base station, and from there some wide gentle slopes can be found at the top of the Strawberry or Wolverine lifts. Intermediates can enjoy over half of the trails here at Sunshine Village, with most of the skiing at the top of the mountain being wide-open bowl skiing, and the lower level slopes offer plenty of tree-lined runs.

Advanced skiers will find the black runs offer a mixture of ultra steep chutes, moguls and deep powder, with a favourite being the runs at the top of Goats Eye Mountain, with a vertical drop of almost 600m. Those is search of real adventure should try the extreme skiing on the North face of Lookout Mountain, and the terrain called Delirium Dive, for some really thrilling skiing, some of the best in the Rockies. Snowboarders will enjoy the newly opened Wildwest Freeride Zone, an extreme area, as well as a terrain park, half-pipe and quarter-pipe.

The Après-ski

Although Sunshine Village is home to the only ski-in/ski-out accommodation in the Banff area, facilities here are rather limited, with visitors taking the shuttle bus to Banff, 8 km away for après-ski entertainment. The Happy Bus takes passengers to and from the bars and restaurants in the area for $1, and there are many places to choose from, including the English and Irish pubs, the Rose & Crown, and the St. James Gate, as well as more authentic local bars such as Wild Bills’ Saloon, or Bumpers Loft Lounge.

Sunshine Village has a good mixture of casual restaurants and upscale gourmet establishments, offering all kinds of cuisine including Italian, German, French, Thai and traditional Canadian. The area also offers heli-skiing, ice-skating, ice-fishing, ice-climbing, dog-sledding and sleigh rides, as well as tours of the beautiful national park.

The Village
